One of my most memorable experiences with somatic healing occurred during my 6th-grade Shakespeare studies. My teacher, Mrs. Sonia Dorian, introduced me to the Katherina and Petruchio courtship scene from The Taming of the Shrew. Little did I know, this scene would become a turning point in my life.
As I immersed myself in the world of iambic pentameter and movement, I found that my stutter began to fade away. The breath control required to speak in this rhythmic pattern, combined with the physicality of the scene, worked wonders for my speech impediment. It was as if Shakespeare himself had reached into my soul and unlocked a hidden talent.
Embracing Performance and Movement
Since that life-changing experience, I have dedicated my life to performing and embracing movement. Whether it’s acting in scripted plays or devising new works solo or in an ensemble, I have discovered the joy and liberation that comes from fully expressing myself.
